Which drinks are suitable for my baby?

Q. Which drinks are suitable for my baby?

A. Water
Babies need to be given drinks that are not contaminated.

  • All water used to make up infant feeds or to dilute juices should be boiled and cooled.
  • Sparking / carbonated water is not suitable for babies, nor bottled water labelled “Natural Mineral Water”, as they may contain higher concentrations of sodium, fluoride, nitrate and sulphate than your baby’s immature system needs.

Baby fruit juice and drinks
These drinks may have sugars, such as glucose, sucrose or fructose, and usually have vitamin C added to them.

  • Care should be exercised when given your baby these drinks, as the sugars can cause dental caries and erosion of the tooth enamel.
  • If these drinks and fruit juices are given to babies, they should be well diluted and given as part of a meal rather than a bed-time drink.
  • These drinks should be served in a feeding cup and not a bottle.
