water fountainThe NNIA – leading nutrition institute in Africa dedicated to furthering the understanding of the science of nutrition for people of all ages – is hosting its annual Scientific Awards and urges nominations to be made. The awards are aimed at medical doctors, dieticians, nutrition scientists, nurses and paramedic personnel. If you are a health care professional or know of health care professionals who have made a significant academic, research or service contribution in nutrition, simply fill out the attached nomination form and send it to us.

About the Awards

The awards are intended to:

  • Acknowledge excellence in nutrition
  • Encourage and focus on development in nutrition in Africa
  • Facilitate communication among scientists in the field
  • Facilitate the dissemination of recent nutrition developments
  • Make the NNIA and its objectives known to the nutrition and medical community

Awards

Five awards have been established and include:

  • Overall Nutrition (every 5 years) – $ 7 500 (USD)
  • Community Nutrition (annually) – $ 3 000 (USD)
  • Clinical Nutrition (annually) – $3 000 (USD)
  • Paediatric Nutrition (annually) – $3 000 (USD)
  • Best Annual Publication (annually) – $3 000 (USD)

Nomination Procedures

All nominations should be submitted with sufficient details, enabling the thorough assessment. The fully-completed application should be submitted to the NNIA. A panel of Nestle Nutrition Institute Africa Scientific Board members, with the relevant expertise, will assess nominations and will notify nominees of their decision in writing.

The following documents should accompany all nominations:

  • An updated Curriculum Vitae of both the nominee and nominating party
  • A detailed letter of support of the nomination from the parent institute's Head of Department, together with a recommendation for the nomination
  • Individuals nominated in their private capacity, must have a letter of recommendation from local / international academic peers or dignitaries
  • A detailed description of the training / activity / research clearly indicating its specific outcomes
  • This should clearly demonstrate excellence, innovation and local relevance

Exclusions

  • The NNIA will not accept nominations that are based on work completed outside Africa
  • Past recipients of the award are excluded for a period of 5 years

Terms and Conditions

A Panel of members of the NNIA Scientific Board (SB) with the relevant expertise in a given field, together with, when appropriate, co-opted established scientists in the relevant field of application, will assess all nominations.

The following will apply:

  • The decision of the panel will be final
  • The nominations must fall within the scope of NNIA’s focus areas. Nominees will be notified of the decision with a letter from the NNIA’s SB. At the same time, the nominee’s parent institution will be informed of the monetary value of the award, as the case may be.
  • Successful nominee/s will be required to use the award money towards further work in the field of nutrition.
  • All successful nominees will be expected to have their photographs, as well as a summary of their work done, published on the NNIA website and in the Annual Report.
